At MadeRight, we build sofas to last decades, not just a couple of years. But much of the furniture in today's market is what's been coined as "fast furniture" – mass-produced and relatively inexpensive, making it easy to obtain and even easier to throw away. Consumers purchase these cheaply-made sofas and use them for a year or two, only to realize that they can't stand up to daily use. The cushions become flat and lumpy, a leg breaks, or the fabric seams fall apart. Then that sofa typically gets discarded and heads straight to the landfill. Or, people move, tossing the desks, beds, and "single use" dressers from their previous homes, and purchase brand new (but still cheap and poorly made) furniture to replace it in their new home. In fact, the EPA estimates that Americans throw away more than 12 million tons of furniture every year, making up about 5% of all landfill waste.

Here's How it Works
When you purchase a new sofa from MadeRight, we'll pick up your old sofa for a small additional fee (California deliveries only). Our delivery agents will remove it from your home and transport it to our recycling facility. Sofas in good condition will be prepped for a second life — donated, repurposed, or rehomed. Sofas that are past their prime are disassembled and sorted by material type.
- Wood frames are reclaimed or composted.
- Foams and fibers are sent to certified recycling partners.
- Metal parts are melted down and reused.
- Usable parts (like legs or zippers) are saved for repairs and prototyping.
COMFORT WITHOUT THE GUILT TRIP
Why it Matters
Most fast furniture sofas (the kind that pile up in landfills after just a few years) are made with low-density foam and cheap frames that break down quickly. At MadeRight, we use kiln-dried hardwood frames and 2.5 lb+ high-resiliency foam (read more about foam types here) — so our sofas can stand up to daily life for well over a decade. Our goal is to make good on your investment and to provide each of our customers will the highest quality sofas we can, keeping them out of landfills and in use for as long as possible.
